Throughout the book, there is a theme that is less obvious than wealth and social class. The theme of two contrasting seasons. The seasons occur when different events take place. For example, the beginning of the novel starts in the early months of summer when the characters are "happy" and partying. Near the end of the book, the seasons change and Summer turns into Fall. When the seasons change so does the overall emotions of the characters. All the tragedies of death and loneliness in the book takes place during the Fall.

The Lost Generation included young adults in Europe and America during the 1920s. They were “lost” because after World War I many of them were disillusioned with the world in general and unwilling to conform to society. Many writters considered themselves apart of the Lost Generation including Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
