When do I use Geodes in my ELA block?
Geodes are a flexible resource that can be use in many different ways to meet the needs of your students. Geodes can be used in small groups, whole group or for independent reading. Geodes PD and the teacher resources will help determine how Geodes will fit in your ELA block.
How long are the lessons?
K-2 PhD Science lessons are 35 minutes and 3-5 PhD Science lessons are 45 minutes.

Does Eureka Math² use games and centers?
Many lessons, fluency activities, and games are appropriate for additional practice in centers or stations. Ideas for their use in such situations often appear in the margin boxes of the Teach book.
Are topics aligned to our state social studies standards?
Wit & Wisdom does not have an alignment to science or social studies standards because we do not want to suggest that Wit & Wisdom can serve as a complete science or social studies curriculum. Because of the essential connection between content knowledge and literacy, Wit & Wisdom builds students’ background knowledge, academic and content vocabulary, and disciplinary literacy in ways that support student success across the content areas. We use CKLA for foundational skills, so can we still use Geodes?
Yes! You will want to look at the Geodes scope and sequence and use the Geode that aligns with your CKLA phonetic concept. You will notice there is a lot of similarity in CKLA and Geodes topics to continue student knowledge building!

What does differentiation look like in EM2?
Differentiation boxes in the margins of the Teach book offer guidance and suggestions for adapting instruction so that all students can successfully access grade-level content. Lessons feature two types of Differentiation boxes: Support and Challenge.
What about my students who are behind grade level and can’t access the text?
Students can listen to texts at a much higher level than they can decode, and young learners benefit from engagement with rich ideas, academic and content-area vocabulary, and knowledge-building content. To create equitable classrooms, Wit & Wisdom maintains high expectations for all students. Wit & Wisdom gives all students the opportunity to learn from grade-level, complex curriculum and texts while supporting them with embedded scaffolds. The curriculum is purposefully sequenced, and text sets are intentionally grouped to build students’ shared background knowledge and content-area vocabulary. The instructional design fosters habits of mind and advanced cognitive skills that can help to narrow possible achievement gaps.
How many minutes a week do teachers use Geodes?
There is no set time students should be in Geodes. Some students will benefit from multiple readings and you will meet with that group of students multiple times in a week. Other students will read Geodes once in small group and then read independently for fluency and comprehension practice.

When do I teach in small groups?
EM2 lessons vary in setting and tempo, including periods of whole-class engagement, small-group and paired collaborations, and independent reflection and processing. Equip reports will provide targeted small group instruction and teachers can pull students for small group instruction during the problem set.
We have 60 min ELA blocks, how will WW fit?
Teaching Wit & Wisdom in under 90 minutes requires some daily customization, but teachers are successfully navigating this with the support of Great Minds implementation leads.
How are students expected to read the non-decodable words since Geodes are not 100% decodable?
Geodes contain a limited number of non decodable words in each text. Many of the words categorized as “not yet decodable” are included because they convey key content knowledge. The Inside Geodes teacher edition provides vocabulary practice so teachers can front load these words. The not yet decodable words are also read aloud to students in digital My Geodes.
Are knowledge decks and posters a separate purchase?
Knowledge decks & poster are included in our hands on materials kits, but can also be replaced individually if needed.

Will EM2 work if we do standard based grading?
EM2 includes a suite of reports including a standards based report you can use to complete standards based report cards.
Can we use WW if we are a standard based grading district?
Grading is different in every district and is inherently nuanced. Mention the standards alignment guides and show where they can see standards aligned to the assessments. Give the caution that while you can use standards based grading, the standards in Wit & Wisdom spiral and it’s not a “mastery” approach where a standard is taught and assessed in a week and the never addressed again so there may be alignment work the district has to do in their end and our implementation/success team will support the district in that work.
Can Geodes be used for intervention?
Yes! When students are working on a specific phonics pattern, teachers can pull the aligned Geodes set for students to apply this concept in a knowledge building text set. Even better is to consider our Geodes + RGR intervention bundle.
Is there a lot of teacher prep in PhD Science?
The PhD Science teacher editions were written with teachers in mind. They are educative in nature and support you in facilitating the lessons. Each lesson has a prepare section that gives insight into that day's learning. The teacher edition also outlines any advance preparation of materials. Within our implementation guide, we have planning & prep resources to support teachers in preparing for lessons.
