She kept Io guarded by Argus, her hundred-eyed servant. Hermes helped Io escape by telling Argus a long story that made him fall asleep. Io escaped, but she was chased by a gadfly all the way to Egypt. There, Zeus turned her back into a human, and she became a goddess-queen.
