When Eugene Talmadge died in 1946 before being sworn in for his fourth term as governor of Georgia, who became the governor in his place?
Three men all declared they would be the governor in December 1946 – outgoing Governor Ellis Arnall, Lt. Governor-elect Melvin Thompson, and write-in candidate Herman Talmadge. The Georgia Supreme Court declared Lieutenant Governor-elect Melvin Thompson would serve as temporary governor until a special election could be held in 1948. Eugene’s son, Herman, won the 1948 special election.
