Scenarios
100
True or false Students not complying with the dress code and uniform requirements while in the clinical setting will be send home by the faculty member, unless the issue can be remedied immediately.
True.
100
True or False Nursing adjuncts need to mark the clinical make-up day on their calendar (the dates are part of their contract) and are expected to be available to work if selected by their course coordinator.
True. Please mark the make-up days on your calendar and keep your schedule free!
100
Your student in clinical stumbles through inserting a urinary catheter, needing lots of prompts from you, despite already testing off on this skill in N 141. What would you do?
Discuss with the student privately and obtain feedback "How do you think that you did?" Student needs a lab prescription (needs done within 1 week), Notify Mrs. Mumma about lab prescription, not met in the tool under "Caring" (demonstrates consistent ability to perform basic nursing skills).
200
You overhear one of your students in clinical saying that she is pregnant. You were unaware of this. What do you want to discuss with this student?
Needs health care provider to fill out a "Health Policy related to illness, injury, or pregnancy" form and student signs acknowledging the policy, Notify the course coordinator, Student's responsibility to be aware of the recommendations from the CDC R/T the avoidance of exposure to infectious diseases by pregnant women (pg. 18)
200
True or false If the clinical adjunct calls in sick, the day may be made up or a alternative assignment issued by the course coordinator or Director of Clinical education. True or false If a student calls the clinical instructor at least 30 minutes prior to arriving late (they had a flat tire), they do not get an Academic deficiency.
True. The course coordinator or DCE will decide how you and your students will be making up the clinical time. **False. Students arriving late, regardless of the reason, get an AD (If you are not sure, give it and the director/DCE can investigate whether there was a massive closure of 283, etc that affected multiple students).

A student arrives to clinical with black nail polish on and a large tattoo showing on the back of their neck. You do not notice it until clinical has already started on the floor. What do you say/do with this student?
Not following the clinical dress code in the handbook. Can the student remedy the situation immediately? If so, they get a "not met" in the tool under "CARING" (demonstrates clinical preparation) and get to stay in clinical. If not, they get sent home and AD (failure to comply with printed clinical requirements) and "Not Met" in the tool.

Your nursing student suddenly develops a migraine 2 hours before clinical is due to end. The student has vomited in the bathroom, and wishes to go home. The instructor advises the student that she is going to get an academic deficiency for "failure to complete the entire clinical experience as scheduled." Is this correct? Why or why not?
No it is not correct. If a student becomes ill in clinical, send them home and no academic deficiency. If they leave more than 30 minutes before the end of clinical, please notify your course coordinator so they arrange how the student will make up the day.

Why is it problematic when nursing adjunct faculty end clinical early or allow students to take an extended lunch break? How would you advise a student who feels that he is being discriminated upon for being male by his clinical instructor (who is not you)?
We need to report a certain number of clinical hours to the state and for accreditation; Students talk- sets up for grievance **Zero tolerance policy- Need to talk directly with the instructor, then Course Coordinator, then unresolved concerns to Campus Director, then unresolved concerns to Campus Dean. Chain of command!

Handbook page 36- “sent home unless the issue can be remedied immediately”- so they would be sent home and receive an AD for being late. FERPA-Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is a federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records and information. Utilize email to send student information, protect information, etc. **Deaf student- entitled to an interpreter, specialized equipment, communication with Disability Services **Transgender- Refer to as the pronoun that he/she identifies with, bathroom usage with the gender identified with, no discrimination, etc.
