Which pet does not need prior approval?
FISH! (14-A)
They must be housed in properly equipped aquariums, 20 gallons or smaller, limit one tank per room (one tank per bedroom in the apartments). No other animals are allowed, even for brief visitation. Residents can be charged for housing an unapproved animal.
What's the difference between quiet hours and courtesy hours?
Quiet hours: (16-A, B, C) Sunday - Thursday 9:00 PM - 8:00 AM. Friday and Saturday 12:00 AM - 8:00AM
Courtesy Hours are defined as outside of "Quiet hours" and residents must exercise good judgement during this period. Noise may be deemed disruptive if it can be heard through a closed door or window.

The following items are prohibited. (this is not a complete list)
Resident who are under the legal drinking age may not... (fill in the blank)
(1-A) Residents who are not of legal drinking age may not possess, be in presence of, consume, or be under the influence of alcohol.
Possession of an open or empty alcohol container shall be interpreted as being consumed. If alcohol can be seen, smelled or otherwise determined to be present, it can be assumed that a policy violation has occurred.
A resident calls you angry because they have a charge for something called "Mānoa Housing fine." They share that they do not have a roommate and do not understand why they are being charged extra. What Community Standard violation would this be?
Vacant spaces (13-C).
Residents must be aware that vacant spaces within a room or apartment are subject to assignment at any time. Vacant spaces must be left clear and clean, contain the appropriate furnishings at all times, and must otherwise be ready for immediate occupancy. Residents can be charged a prorated room rate and any relevant penalty fees for use of a vacant space. Refer to “Administrative and Damage Fee Sheet” at http://manoa.hawaii.edu/housing/feesheet.
Your CO-RA came over to your room to hang out when she informs you that right below she arrived, her resident was showing her a taser that her dad got her for protection. The RA informs you that she confiscated the taser and left it in the RD office. Was this the right decision?
No. The CO-RA should have contacted DPS and allow them to handle the taser.
What is considered drug paraphernalia?
(12-C) Bongs, rolling paper, vape pens used for drugs, empty alcohol containers, etc.
Possession of drug paraphernalia is prohibited.
While walking your community, you notice a resident in possession of a bong (without residue) and informs you that is is a decoration for the room. What do you do?
12C. Illegal Drugs/Controlled Substances
Possession of drug paraphernalia is prohibited (i.e., bongs, rolling paper used for drugs, etc.).
You will walk, with your resident and their bong, to your supervisor's office. The resident will place the bong on the desk and you will text your supervisor that the bong is present on the desk.
*You do not touch the bong.
Drinking games promote what? (Specific Answer)
(1-F) Excessive consumption whether or not alcohol is involved, and therefore are strictly prohibited. (Includes water pong, etc.)
(1-G) Common source containers are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated and/or disposed of. Common source containers include, but are not limited to, kegs, party balls, water jugs, and beer bongs.
While documenting a situation, a student asks more about the conduct process and if they will be kicked out of housing. What can you share?
You can share that...
You are walking through the halls when you hear loud music being played and find your resident with small amounts of marijuana ready to roll a joint. Do you call DPS.
No need to call DPS. You will document and dispose the marijuana. You will never touch the substance, you will have your resident discard it for you.
We can assume marijuana has been consumed in a room if you can.... (fill in the blank)

Residents are running around the hall playing with a water gun and shooting each other to create community. What do you do?
(10.B) Firearms, Weapons, Explosives.
Possession of any type of dangerous object or hazardous material is not allowed in or around the on-campus housing communities. This policy incorporates “toy” weapons, including but not limited to, those that shoot a projectile, such as an airsoft gun, paintball gun, BB gun, pellet gun, water gun, or a slingshot.
You will confiscate the water guns and take it to your supervisor's office. You will place the water guns on the desk and you will text your supervisor that the bong is present on the desk.
You hear loud music, multiple voices cheering, plastic ball sounds hitting what sounds like plastic cups. You knock on the door, when the resident opens up the door, you do not see any alcohol. The resident explains that there is only water in the cups. Is there a Community Standards policy violation?
Yes!

If you have good documentation about what you hear from inside the room we can often use that as a basis to find residents responsible for failure to comply along with other policy violations that can be heard or smelled.
You are walking back from class and as you are entering your community you see someone struggling to bring in a bicycle through the front door. Is there a Community Standards violation?
Yes! Bikes, electric bicycles, scooters, or mopeds are not allowed in the Residence Halls/Apartments. Caveat: collapsible/foldable bikes are okay to bring in. No riding or parking in public pedestrian areas/any other area marked "no riding" or "no parking" No hover boards are permitted (6A,B,C)

What is the difference between service animals and comfort animals/emotional support animals?
(14-B, C) Service Animals are trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. While comfort animals are often used for medical treatment plans to provide companionship, relieve loneliness, and sometimes help with depression, anxiety, and certain phobias, they are not considered Service Animals by the ADA.
ESAs/Comfort Animals must be approved by KOKUA program prior to bringing the animal to housing.
During an incident involving marijuana, the resident shows you their medical marijuana card and explains the use of marijuana is needed due to extreme anxiety. Would this be a Community Standards violation?
(12-E) Yes, the possession of a medical marijuana card does not allow for the possession or consumption of marijuana, or for the possession of drug paraphernalia, within on-campus housing premises.
A resident comes to you with a concern about a knife they saw in their roommates drawer. The resident described it as a large kitchen knife. Is there a Community Standards policy violation?
(10-B) No, it is not a policy violation.
Only knives that have blades longer than 3 inches and/or are not intended for cooking or use as a tool are prohibited.
If ten friends are gathering in an apartment and 1 is 20 years old, how many students need to be documented?
(1-B) Everyone needs to be documented.
Residents of legal drinking age may be in the presence of, possess or consume alcohol within the privacy of their room or apartment, so long as ALL occupants of the room/apartment are of legal drinking age.
(1E) Anyone who is 21 years of age or older is prohibited from distributing alcohol to anyone below the legal drinking age. The State of Hawai‘i’s Social Host Liability Law makes it illegal to host underage drinking in a residence.
While walking around your floor, one of your resident's room door is open. You stop by to say hi. While talking story, you see an air fryer unplugged on one of the bookshelves in the resident's room. Is there a Community Standards violation?
No, there is no violation (2A).
Use of cooking appliances such as air fryers, Instapots, electric grills, coffee makers, and toasters/toaster ovens is strictly prohibited in residence hall rooms, but may be stored in residence hall rooms for use in community kitchen areas.
You and your CO-RA are completing rounds when you notice a white powder-like substance in the community bathroom and are unsure what it is. What do you do?
Contact DPS. DPS will need to be contacted for anything that is harder than Marijuana or if there is a large amount of substance within the presence.
You notice a resident using a nicotine vape in the Hale Aloha courtyard. You verify that they are 21 years old. Is there a Community Standards policy violation?
(20-A) Yes! University of Hawaiʻi campuses are tobacco free. The use of any form of tobacco products are prohibited on University property. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco and electronic smoking devices.
14. Pets, Service Animals, and Assistance (Comfort) Animals
Give notice to the resident that they have 24 hours to find a new home for the animal. The RA/RD will follow up within the next day to ensure the pet has been relocated.
A 21 year old student returning to campus is found non-responsive in the hallway. Is there a Community Standards violation?
Yes! (1-D) Misuse of or abuse of alcohol, regardless of where it is consumed, which results in disruptive or destructive behavior, is prohibited.
