In 1973, they released a horror movie which, for the most part, has still been known as the "scariest horror movie of all time." It was a major box office hit. The plot involved a demon that possesses a little girl and this priest who tries to rid her of the demon. What was the name of this movie? (Hint: if you have no idea, use logic to think about what you might name a movie about someone "getting rid" of a demon).
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT promoting this movie. DO NOT go home and watch it. It is way too scary and gory for 7th graders and most definitely rated R. Also, demons don't really possess people in real life, (it's made up) so don't go home scared.
The Exorcist
The holiday "Halloween" that we all know and celebrate today comes from a blend of traditions. Pretty much everything but the name "Halloween" comes from ancient Celtic culture, where people thought Oct 31 was a weird day in which the boundary between the dead and the living blurred, and therefore lit fires and wore masks to ward off evil spirits. The name comes from Christian tradition. In the Christian religion, Nov 1st marks "All Saints Day." The day before was called THIS DAY, which eventually gave rise to the name "Halloween."
