Soap and water are best when hands are visibly dirty or after using the bathroom. Hand sanitizer works well when hands are not visibly dirty.

IPAC completes hand hygiene audits to ensure staff are remembering to complete hand hygiene at the proper moments. Doing the audits allows us to provide in-the-moment feedback. Raising awareness helps reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections.

Does my patient with CDiff need a bathroom to wash their hands or is alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) ok?

Patients with CDiff should have a dedicated bathroom. They should be washing their hands with soap and water. ABHR does not kill the CDiff spores.

What are the steps of hand washing?

  • Wet hands with warm or cold running water
  • Apply soap (enough to cover all hand surfaces)
  • Rub hands together for 15–20 seconds, making sure to clean:
    • Palms
    • Backs of hands
    • Between fingers
    • Thumbs
    • Fingertips and under nails
    • Wrists
  • Rinse hands thoroughly under running water
  • Dry hands completely with a clean paper towel
  • Turn off the tap using the paper towel (if applicable)

Do IPAC report Hand Hygiene Audits to the Ministry of Health?

Yes, annually a hand hygiene report is submitted to the Ministry of Health. The result of this report is also posted on the PRH website.
