A Menorah has 7 branches and a Channukiah has 9. In the time of the temple, the Menorah, with its 7 branches represented the days of the week, with one candle being slightly above the others to represent the holy day of Shabbat. The Channukiah, with it's 9 branches, has spots for the 8 candles representing the 8 days the oil burned, and one for the candle that lights all of the other ones.
