How long does a client have to be in 

Pre-Treatment or Stabilization to leave the facility on their own?

30 Days.  Write your buddy's name on the sign in/out form at the front desk.

*Counsellor may assign a client with less than 30 days or approve client to leave the premises unescorted.

Where is the sign in/out document located and why is this document important?

The location of the sign in/out sheet is at the Front Desk Entrance area.

There are very specific, legal and practical reasons why clients must sign in/out. This is a legal document. Among other issues, fire regulations insist that an accurate record kept of all persons in the building.

Is it okay to write "OUT" as the location on the sign in/out sheet?

No!  The information provided on the sheet must be specific.  Examples of acceptable information such are UIC/Lawyer'/court/coffee, etc.  Print name and information clearly so that it is can be understood.

What is the curfew while in Harbour Light Treatment?

11:00 pm Sunday – Thursday and 12:00am Fri-Sat.

* Always return to Harbour Light should you be late. Staff will confine you until you speaks with a counsellor.

How many meetings do you have to attend per week?

Four meetings per week minimum.  There are enough meetings in house to attend.  The Saturday Spiritual Step group and the Alumni meeting on Thursday evening at 6:30pm count as part of the four meetings.

Are you allowed to move furniture around in your rooms?

No!  Do not move furniture or rearrange the layout of the room.

All persons and property of Salvation Army must be respected. Room and personal appearance are to be kept clean and neat at all times. Dorms and double rooms will be inspected daily.

Is Saturday morning 12 Step Spirituality mandatory for Pre-treatment/Stabilization clients?

Yes it is, and for Phase One/90 Day clients.

Can a UA that is found positive for substance use be appealed?

Yes, a second test is available as an appeal should a client contest the results of the first test. The results of the second test will be final. Clients are required to participate in random drug and alcohol testing. Refusal to participate in the testing constitutes guilt and will result in discharge from the program. The Harbour Light utilization of drug and alcohol testing is to monitor “house rules” and is not to be used as the basis for any legal purpose).

Who is responsible for ensuring you are signed up on an attendance sheet?

You are responsible and attendance sheets are provided for sign in and sign out. Clients are responsible for notifying their primary counsellor should they not be able to participate in program.

Report directly to Foodline Monitor before beginning and when leaving Foodline.

Are you allowed food in your rooms?

No!  No food, food preparation or appliances of any kind are allowed in resident’s rooms.

Are cell phones allowed?

Yes!  Cell phones and personal music devices are permitted after business hours (7am to 6pm Mon-Fri). These devices may be used during daytime in clients’ rooms without distraction.

Do not use the speaker on your cell phone for phone calls or playing music/videos when in the hallways, chapel, dining room or client lounge.  Use headphones for this.

What do you do when a fire alarm goes off?

In the event of a fire alarm, all residents are to evacuate the building at the nearest exit.  Be ready to evacuate with an intermittent alarm. Evacuate the building with full alarm. 

All clients must participate in fire drills.

Is Harbour Light a harm reduction facility?

No. There is a ZERO TOLERANCE for any client who possesses, uses or traffics drugs or alcohol in or out of the premises while residing at Harbour Light. Immediate dismissal will result if a client voluntarily admits or is discovered (by room inspection, search or urinalysis testing) to possess or use drugs or alcohol and/or is found to be involved in the traffic of substances. Undue confrontation by a client during discharge will result in a 911 police call to address the situation

Is it okay to hang out with detox clients?

No, there is no smoking or congregating with Detox clients.

How many personal belongings are you allowed to have at Harbour Light?

Maximum of two bags.  Clients cannot accumulate excessive clothing. No personal furniture is allowed in residence.  Two hands, two bags.

Where and when are you allowed to smoke or vape?

Residents can smoke in the one designated area ONLY — at the far corner of the roof garden. There is an awning for inclement weather. 

When roof garden is closed to Harbour Light clients, they may smoke on the street, to the right side (west side) of the main doors, past the line on the sidewalk.  Give foot traffic room to walk through on the sidewalk.

Are you allowed a TV, stereo's, personal computers, or tablets in Pre-Treatment or Phase 1?

No!  Phase 2 and 3 clients will only be allowed these devices on the approval of their counsellor.

Does Harbour Light give out travel mugs to the new clients?

Yes!  One traveler cup is issued upon intake.

If clients are observed walking around the building carrying food or uncovered drinks they will be reported to their counsellor.

Are you allowed over-the counter medications in your room (eg. Tums/Tylenol ect.)?

No medications of any kind are allowed in client dorms/rooms. If you have a Standing Orders for signed by your doctor, we can administer these meds to you.

Is it okay to lend and borrow from others at Harbour Light?

No.  Lending, borrowing, trading or any transactions of products or services is strictly prohibited.

What is the hours of the roof top patio?

6:00am to 7:45am and in the evening 6:00pm until curfew and open all day until curfew on Saturday and Sunday.

Clients are to use the ashtrays provided. If clients do not use the ashtray they will lose the right to smoke in the garden. Noise levels to be kept to minimum at all times. NO SPITTING OR CIGARETTE BUTTS ON PATIO OR GARDEN!

What is the consequence for fighting or uttering threats?

Clients who engage in fighting will be discharged immediately. Threats or the offering of threats will result in the client’s dismissal from Harbour Light. Neither of these offenses will be tolerated in any way.

When are you allowed to adjust dosages of your ORT medications?

Only during Pre-Treatment/Stabilization or Phase 2 & 3.  No tapering during Phase 1, or the 90 days program.

Clients are required to take their medications in front of the medication counselor or in front of a person designated by the Manager of Addiction Services.

When does the 90 day treatment program begin?

When you are assigned to a counsellor and begin in their group. This is Phase 1, and the 90 days begins.  

Pre-treatment and Stabilization are not included in the 90 days.

What can you do if you want to quit smoking?

Smoking Cessation programs are available. Ask your counsellor for more information.
