Explain the story on how Buddha Bhagwan stayed calm while the man was insulting him.
Buddha Bhagwan was sitting under a tree. A man came to him and started shouting. After abusing Buddha, that man stood there, waiting for Buddha’s response or reaction, but to his surprise, there was not even a slight change in Buddha’s expression. The man got angrier and used more insulting words to hurt Buddha. Still, Buddha did not respond. This kept on going for few hours.
Then, the man got tired and asked Buddha, “I have been abusing and insulting you, yet you are not angry with me. Why?”
Buddha replied, “It’s because I haven’t accepted it..”
The man got confused and asked, “But you heard every single word. Didn’t you?”
Buddha smiled and replied, “If I don’t want abuse, why should I listen to it?”
The man became even more confused.
Buddha understood his confusion and explained further, “All of the abuse remains with you”
The man replied, “If I have directed all of these words at you, how would they remain with me?”
Buddha questioned, “If you give someone coins and that person doesn’t accept them, with whom will the coins remain?”
The man replied, “Of course they will remain with me”
After listening to man’s reply, Buddha smiled and said, “You are correct! The same happened with your insults. When you came here and said those insulting words, I didn’t accept them, so all of the words remain with you. Thus, I have no reason to be angry with you.”
The man understood his mistake and apologized to Buddha.
