100

Explain why you think Mrs. Billings tells Margaret her story.

To show Margaret that she understands where she is coming from and how she overcame. She doesn't support Margaret's decision to steal, acknowledging it was wrong of her to do so from her aunt, but notes how it enabled her to have the life she does now, though frought with challenges. Perhaps it is her own flawed upbringing that makes her capable of agreeing that sometimes adults, especially parents do not make the best decisions. Her story makes her the perfect person to empathize with Margaret and Zulma as both have difficult home situations.

What does Zulma's experience in Canada reveal to us about immigration?

While immigration has its positives, such as more opportunities, it can cause profound loss and feelings of displacement. Zulma feels uprooted from her home and is not happy in Canada (homesickness).

It can also be argued that immigration for her is a new form of slavery as she is trapped in an abusive household, feeling her only option is to run away.

It can be a lonely place if one has no family or friends

She believes it is the only way her mother will know she is not happy and that doesn't want to live with her if she is living with her stepfather and that she wants to go back to her Gran.

Margaret's period serves as a bonding moment between her and her mother. We experience true maternal connection. Explain what it is about this experience that causes this dramatic shift in her mother.

Vashtina finally feels like she and her daughter have something in common seeing as they are always at odds.
This is something they can have together without Cuthbert interfering or trying to control that aspect of them too. Cuthbert is a domineering figure who controls almost every aspect of the household. Menstruation is the one thing he cannot "discipline" or manage. It creates a private, feminine space where Vashtina can lead and advise Margaret without his interference.
