Name 2 key elements of Regency fashion.

What are:

  • Empire Silhouette: The waistline was raised to just below the bust, with the dress falling in a straight, slender line to the ankles.
  • Fabrics & Color: White was the most popular color for day dresses, as it was associated with classical antiquity, though pastel and, bright colors were also worn. Lightweight, sheer, and breathable materials like muslin, cotton, and silk were preferred.
  • Sleeves & Necklines: Day dresses featured modest, high necklines and long sleeves, while evening wear was characterized by low, square or rounded necklines and short, puffed sleeves.
  • Undergarments & Outerwear: Instead of heavy, full-body corsets, women wore short stays or chemises. Shawls were essential accessories for warmth, along with bonnets, gloves, and reticules (small handbags).
  • Footwear: Low, flat-soled shoes, similar to modern ballet slippers, replaced high heels.
