Name the 5 dimensions of health
Physical, Mental, Emotional, Social and Spiritual
Resilience is part of which dimension?
Emotional
Provide the definition of optimal HWB
The best level of health and wellbeing an individual can realistically attain.
Identify the health indicator that measures death rates of children under 1
Infant mortality rate
List the two measures of morbidity.
Incidence & Prevalence
Explain how HWB is dynamic
constantly changing, change can be sudden or gradual
Explain why the concept of HWB is subjective.
Health and wellbeing is said to be subjective because a number of factors affect the way people experience and view health and wellbeing, including age, fitness, body weight, social networks, income, occupation, education and culture.
Outline two benefits of optimal HWB as a resource for individuals.
(Examples below that must link to an aspect of a dimension):
i.e. More likely to work, Less likely to die prematurely, More likely to live independently, They can remaining physically active which further promotes HWB
What is one DALY equal to?
One Disability Adjusted Life Year is equal to one year of healthy life lost due to both premature death and the years lived with disability or illness. Calculated as YLL + YLD.
Briefly describe what is meant by health status.
The level of health experienced by an individual, population or group.
Physical to Social relationship
Someone who is sick with a chronic illness may not be able to continue with regular activities with their friends reducing their ability to maintain a supportive network of friends
A 25-year-old male is suffering from depression. Comment on how his spiritual, physical and social HWB may be affected.
Explain how optimal HWB can create a positive cycle through generations.
Through generations — parents experiencing good health and wellbeing have an increased capacity to adequately care for and raise their children. As a result, their children are more likely to experience optimal health and wellbeing themselves.
What is the difference between incidence and prevalence?
Incidence is the number of new cases of a given condition in a given time period.
Prevalence is the total number of causes of a given condition in a given time period.
List a positive and a negative of the health status indicator 'self-assessed health status'
Positive: provides information on a broad area of health (all dimensions)
Negative: Is subjective
Mental health and well-being relates to the ......and the ability to......
Mental HWB refers to the current state of well-being relating to the mind and brain and the ability to think and process information
How is health and wellbeing best defined?
HWB relates to a physical, social, emotional, mental & spiritual dimensions & is characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable & engaged.
Provide 3 benefits that you could use for 'a benefit of optimal HWB globally'.
1. reduced morbidity & mortality = countries to come together to focus on combatting globals issues (climate change, terrorism)
2. more people can be productive, more resources being available (shelter, food) meeting the needs of the community, reducing conflict and promoting global peace.
3. Increase average incomes helping to eliminate global poverty.
Explain maternal mortality rates
Deaths of mothers as a result of pregnancy, childbirth and 6 weeks after delivery
How is the information for self assessed health status collected?
National surveys
Name three examples of Spiritual HWB
Meaning and purpose, sense of belonging, values and beliefs and peace and harmony
Using the example of illness, describe how two dimensions of HWB can impact each other.
Students must demonstrate a two-way relationship. All aspects of dimensions must be different.
Without using an economic example, outline one benefit of optimal HWB as a resource nationally.
If people within a country have lower levels of disease & injury, that is, they have optimal mental health and wellbeing, there are fewer people needing to use the healthcare system (less beds filled with lifestyle diseases), promoting sustainability of the health system & putting resources into caring for the elderly.
Explain how Condition A contributes more YLL even though Condition B causes more deaths.
Condition A is responsible for more deaths of younger people compared to Condition B. Each death of a young person contributes more YLLs than the death of an older person.
Why it is beneficial to use a range of health data when making statements about the overall level of health being experienced by a population.
Different statistics provide information on different aspects of health status. For example, to examine only mortality rates would not provide information about non-fatal illnesses and injuries being suffered.
