What grades are students allowed to participate in sports and clubs?

ALL GRADES! Some teams have junior (Grades 9-10) and seniors (Grades 11-12) split apart while others have all grades together.

What supplies do you bring to class?

A pen/pencil, a binder, and paper! However, some classes may require extra supplies such as a calculator for math.

What is the correct side to walk on in the hallways?

The right side! This helps to keep everyone moving and prevents people from bumping in to each other.

What subject would these teachers teach you?

Math! Mrs. Mathia and Mr. O'Rourke might be your grade 9 math teacher!

Myth or Fact: You will get shoved in a locker on your first day.

MYTH! This NEVER happens at St. James as bullying is not tolerated.

What events, clubs, or teams help you meet the most friends?

All of them! Getting involved and trying new things is the key to meeting new people and making new friends.

How many credits do you need to graduate high school?

30! Each year you will take religion and English along with other grade-based prerequisites and electives! For your first year of high school you can expect to take English, religion, math, science, french, geography, and two electives like art and gym!

What should you leave in your locker before going to class? Hint- Our school has a uniform.

Your hoodies! It is important that you wear the uniform properly each day to each class! This means non-uniform hoodies stay in your lockers!

What is a guidance counsellor?

A guidance counsellor is someone who helps guide you through high school whether that be with courses, university preparation, or even your personal life! They are here for you 24/7!

Myth or Fact: You will know people in your class.

FACT! You will almost always know at least one person in your class and on the rare occasion you don't, you will get to know many people!

To avoid bumping into people in the hallways, what should you do when you turn a corner?

Don't take sharp turns and keep to the right!

Myth or Fact: There are grade specific tables in the cafeteria. 

Myth! In our main cafeteria, anyone can sit at any table regardless of their grade!

What student-led councils are at St. James?

There are 4 main councils at our school: Student Council, Arts Council, Athletic Council, and Environmental Council. We also offer other committees such as Social Justice, Grad committee, SAFE club and Relay for Life Committee.

What specialty programs do we offer here at St. James?

Terra (Outdoor Education), SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major Program), Co-op, Dual Credit, Hospitality, and LEAP (Leaders in Exercise in Athletics).

Are academics the ONLY important factor in high school?

Although academics are very important, you mental health and social life are equally as important. It's all about finding a balance!

Picture this! You are running late to school one day! Who do you go see before class to grab a late slip?

Myth or Fact: If you are late to class, your teacher will lock you out. 

Myth! Your teacher will not lock you out but out of respect, please be on time. Our teachers are understanding so if something is going on, you can talk to them!

What are the two other catholic high schools that we compete against in sports and sometimes hold events with?

Bishop Macdonnell and Our Lady of Lourdes!

What courses are mandatory in Grade 9?

English, Math, Science, French, Geography, and religion.

What clue should you look for on your schedule to know if your class is upstairs?

Example: 107 vs 214

Any room number that starts with the number two is upstairs!

Mr. MacPherson is our principal and Mrs. Green and Mrs. Cummings are our vice principals!

Myth or Fact: Hallway names coordinate with the subject being taught in that hallway. 

FACT! Math classes are in the math hall, science classes are in the science hall, English classes are in the English hall, and gym is in the gym!
