Where did the phrase Ivy League come from?

In 1933, a sportswriter named Stanley Woodward used the phrase "ivy colleges" to refer to the older Northeastern schools with common athletic programs. The term "Ivy" likely came from a tradition at these schools of "planting the ivy," a ceremony where graduating students would plant ivy as a symbol of enduring growth.
