Siddartha was born a prince and spent the first 29 years of his life within the palace walls. He left the palace at 29 and saw three forms of suffering. He decided to live as an ascetic and give up all cravings/desires, including enough food. He still suffered while living this way, so he realized instead after 49 days of meditation that the path to enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, or the middle way.
