In your own words - describe the procedure of hip surgery.
1. An incision is made above the hip on the affected side, muscles and tendons are detached and the femur is dislocated to allow access to the joint
2. The head of the femur is removed
3. The Acetabulum/socket is cleaned by removing all damaged debris, cartilage and bone
4. Diseased articular surfaces are replaced with synthetic materials
5. A new synthetics socket and liner is fit into place where the Acetabulum once was
6. A stem is drilled into the neck of the Femur and a ball is then placed on the end, which corresponds to the size of the synthetic socket and liner
7. The ball is placed into the synthetic socket and is tested for its mobility
8. Muscles and tendons around the new joint are reattached
9. The wound is stapled shut
What is the most common population affected by hip fractures?
