What are resident interactions like? What do they look like?

-We have a lot of fun in building R

-Whiteboard interactions

-Seeing each other around

-Building relationships with each other at my events

200

How have my strengths benefitted myself, my residents, and my teammates?

My strengths lie mostly in relationship/rapport building.

~Empathy~

-I typically understand people's emotions. This has helped me with residents to anticipate needs and questions they might have

-Building connections with staff and my residents

-I am very expressive and I make people feel comfortable opening up to me

-I value people and it shows in my connections and relationships. There have been many times this year where I have brought people together because I'm good at initiating conversations groups would connect to and find common ground on

-I try to make people I interact with feel special or boost their confidence in some way without leaving people out

-I try to brighten people's moods when they are going through a hard time or offer to listen to them

~Developer~

-This means I love to see people grow and change for the better

-I love to celebrate people's victories

-I like to motivate people

-Making people smile is something I love...and cracking yokes

-I'm encouraging

-I use this strength in almost all of the conversations I have with residents and coworkers

-If they tell me something they are struggling with or upset about I try to encourage them and motivate them about it.

Why does Kylie want to be an RA again?

For so many reasons

-I love being apart of this RA community and the one I have cultivated in my dorm, and would love to do that next year.

-Building rapport with residents is so much fun for me. Those relationships mean a lot to me

-I love how many people I've met because of this job

-I enjoy the creative tasks we do

-Not to kiss up, but I have great bosses.

-Helping people with their problems is gratifying and rewarding

-Overall, I enjoy just about every part of this job. I think it suits my personality pretty well

200

"Easily approachable funny very good planning skills"

"Building R has suffered from some lackluster RAs the past couple of years, but Kylie has been excellent!"

"AMAZING 10/10 person"

300

How have my strengths benefitted myself, my residents, and my teammates? Again!

Includer

-I love to make sure everyone's voice is heard in a group and I worry about if everyone is having a good time

-I include everyone with no prejudice which is important for this role because of the many different identities residents have

-I thrive in group scenarios and activities which is great for this job

-I'm very open to different perspectives and ideas

-In roommate agreements I make sure to be very inclusive

-I am interested in serving those who are marginalized and invisible and who get overlooked

Positivity

-I lighten spirits

-Celebration for a good job even the small things

-Enthusiasm and energy is sometimes contagious

-Cheerful and easy going and find the good in people

I think a big part of this position is a positive disposition so that you are more approachable to residents. It's also good for teams because it helps the mood and lessens the levity of things

300

Kylie, how will you continue to stay motivated in the position next year?

-My motivation from this position will come from loving the work

-My co-workers and pro-staff are pretty great and motivating as well

-I think residents who live on campus deserve a good RA who cares about them personally and wants to see them succeed and have a good time

-I will get things done when they're due because I would feel bad if I didn't

-I will never make an egg pun again (maybe)

300

If you were tasked with rebuilding the RA position, what pieces would you emphasize and what would you take out?

First of all, I think all the things we do are necessary to the RA position anywhere, however there are more important things than others in this job

Duty/rounds and the safety of our residents

  • There should always be someone on call or at desk to help residents with anything

Connections with residents

  • Huge part of this role are our connections to our residents. We would want them to come to us with problems and feel comfortable to do so.

Desk work

-A very important job but could be completed by non-RAs

Flyering and events

Events help connect residents and strengthen bonds with them but not mandatory to safety

Bulleting boards, door decs, and newsletters

All of these things are not necessary but help residents engage and get involved via housing or on campus so I think these things are necessary but we can’t gage the engagement of newsletters so who knows if the majority reads it

300

How do you advocate for yourself in the RA position?

-Communication with co-workers to get coverage for desk or duty

-I like to hear about feedback in this position to keep myself accountable

-Setting boundaries with residents and co-workers

-Knowing the resources

300

What did your newsletters and door decs look like?

400

How have my strengths benefitted myself, my residents, and my teammates? One last time!

Responsibility

-I take my commitments personally and am bound to it until it is completed

-I keep my promises and hate to let people down

-Reliability

-The work I do is quality because I hold myself to that standard

-I want to be regarded as trustworthy and reliable so I think about ways I can be better

Responsibility is very important for RAs. With tasks, due dates, ethical obligations, and quality work. This job is very important, so it is crucial to be responsible so nothing slips through the cracks

400

How will you work to motivate or encourage your fellow RAs Kylie?

-My personal connections with my co-workers include a lot of motivation and encouragement because we care about each other

-I celebrate their successes

-I offer to help them if needed

-I stay positive with them and try to uplift them

400

Kylie, tell us about an experience you had this year in the position that you feel best encapsulates the skills you bring to the RA position

Jeopardy event

-Rapport building, event planning, and developer skills were really shown at this event

-People came out of their shells, great ice breaker event to start the year

-That was one of my most attended events

-As you can see, I had a great time and love executing Alex Trebek

-Everyone got at least two donuts and had a great time

-I loved showing my personality at this event and I think it really set up my relationships with a lot of my residents because we all had a great time

-Many laughs with them and gave them a Scrub Daddy to reward their intelligence.

-Was it a bribe? No just a fun event. I also                  had fun with my co-workers at this event,                building rapport with them there as well.

-Also roommate agreements exuded my rapport and relationship building among the roommates

400

Identify what areas of growth you’ve noticed for yourself as you’ve worked in this position

-Duty and desk switch forms -This was more of a problem for me in my novice months of RAing but I got a handle on it now

-I need to work on more clear communication as well as being more intentional/thorough when talking to residents about housing policy or concerns

-A couple of weekly reports, one or two attendance sheets into mav sync, or an event submission form have been late

-How I come off to people

400

With new RA peers, reflect on what leadership skills you bring to a team work environment

-I am a very outgoing and welcoming person, this is seen in a lot of places and with the new RAs this semester

-My positivity and including nature will help

-I love getting to know new people and would include them in activities as well as help them with questions they have

-I offered the new RAs this semester help

-Conversation skills

-Willingness to speak to big groups

-Knowledge of the job and leading by example

-NHRI (humble brag)

For how I’m perceived by residents I can work on reading people better
