What is a woman who had a fear of debris destroying her home. In 1965, Knott County, KY, she sat in front of a bulldozer trying to destroy her home which led to her arrest. This brought attention to gov Ned Bretthit and the medias attention to the negative effects of coal mining. (Ollie Combs)

Bill Monroe

what is the father of bluegrass music. He was a famous musician who is credited with creation of bluegrass music that was derived from his band called the Bluegrass Boys in the mid- late 1900s in Rosine, KY.

what is the Kentucky Educational Reform act of 1990 better paid and better educated teachers. It provided more technology in classrooms, created a new testing system with funding tied to test results, and gave the education program power to assume control of schools that were failing.

Expanded Gambling 

an initiative the KY gov is trying to push in 2023 in order to create new jobs and a new economy that doesn't rely on agriculture or extraction industries. They are attempting to legalize sports gambling to show how the state is attempting to stay away from an economy that relies on agriculture.

Chandler Medical Center

A center named after Albert B Chandler that was opened in the 1960s at UK. It was the second of many university based medical centers established in the US after WWII. It developed with the idea that it would serve most of eastern KY.

Martha Layne Collins

she was on the pritchard committee for academic excellence and was the first female governor in 1983. she created a new education pack by increasing teacher pay, reducing class sizes, and focusing on improvement of poorer area schools. she overall helped improve education through funding and taxes.

what is an american politician who is the longest serving senator in KY history serving since 1985. He has served as both a minority and majority leader and is one of the most successful KY politicians.

Day Law

State rep of Breathitt County, KY passed the Day Law which made it illegal for blacks and whites to go to school together. The law was eventually removed and overall showed how KY wanted to desegregate. it remained in effect until 1946

Plagues in Appalachia in the 21st century that consisted of overdose, suicide, and addiction. The diseases affect people in Appalachia more than they do in other places.

Mountaintop Removal 

a technique used by mining companies to blast off the tops of mountains in order to access a coal seam. This started in the 1970s in Appalachia, KY. It became dangerous to surrounding communities and harmful to the environment.

Anne Braden

what is an advocate for racial equality who was greatly bothered by racial segregation. she bought a house for an African American couple in Louisville in 1959. The house was bombed and destroyed. This led to Anne trying to bring housing equality to kentucky but was eventually accused of destroying this house to overthrow the commonwealth of KY.

He is a former UK president from 1917-1940. Through his academic excellence, he transformed UK into a modern 20th century institution of higher education. He was an expert on tax return and an influential reformer.

Kentucky tourists collection of bourbon distilleries throughout the state in the 21st century. This showed the impact bourbon has had on KY and shows the states dedication to bourbon and tourism.

Nothing New for Easter 

Civil rights activists organized a boycott of some department stores in Louisville in 1961. The campaign urged customers to buy "nothing new for easter" from any store that practiced discrimination. This caused significant economic problems in KY.

She established a health clinic outside of her house.

Bert Combs

what is the 50th governor of kentucky in 1960. he had big plans for KY education and took steps to make things better. he raised the sales tax to 3 cents to gove a $900 dollar raise to teachers who had a bachelors degree. he also combined smaller school districts to create bigger high schools.

gov in KY leaves the tobacco industry in 2005 and provides $10 billion over 10 years to help farmers leave tobacco market because tobacco was being used to create drugs. The gov did this inn order to improve public health by reducing the amount of tobacco produced.

Harry Caudill (man)

what is an author and lawyer that came from a mining family from eastern KY. He became a lawyer and took on coal companies and coal mining cases. He claims it is not their fault that they are poor because they were taken advantage of by the coal industry. He wanted to overturn broad form deed.

what is KYs 47th governor in 1947 who dragged KY into the 20th century. he redirected his tax dollars to pay teachers more. he showed democratic resurgance in KY.

Will Locket Case 

He was a black man and WWI veteran who had a criminal record. He was seen near the place of a 10 year old girls body to which he confessed to the crime. however, we are unaware of the pressure put onto him to say he committed it when he didn't. The trial was held February 1920 at the KY courthouse in Lexington. Lynch mobs gathered outside the courthouse which led to the gov banning mobs.
