This act promised indigenous men that they could become British citizens if: they spoke French or English, received an elementary education, were sober and free of debt. They would be granted 50 acres of land and all their Indian status was removed. Once this act failed, this second act was passed which made women, who married men not recognized by the government as indigenous and their children, no loner have Indian status.
