In doing a search on ProQuest Dissertation Publications, the number of dissertations for "Educational Technology historiography" was a total under 10. Why do you think this is so few?
Historiography as a dissertation process does not have a typical form or template as you may have seen with other qualitative dissertations. Each dissertation has an introducation, a literature review and a methodology chapter. In the historigraphic disseration, this information is provided in some form perhaps not individual chapters. In additons, the analysis and results chapters may take on a chronlogical, thematic or other method to share the information.

Interpretation of words, terms used in historical documents must be in context, which is difficult as words or phrases change over time. This difficultly may be caused by vagueness and presentism. Vagueness refers to the unclear meaning of words or phrases used in the source document. The researcher may not interpret the context as originally intended.

The term handheld devices will be used to describe and identify instructional tools used in the past although a handheld device was not a term used in the 1950s-1980s. Just imagine my excitement when I found a term that represents what I am constructing - take the term "Handheld device" back to the past.
