"Separate but equal" was the idea that enforced racial segregation which supposedly ensured equal opportunities for all races and it was declared through Plessy v. Ferguson case which gave a start to segregational ideas and actions.

What is the origin of the name "Jim Crow" and what did it mean?

The name "Jim Crow" comes from a stage performance from 1828 that depicted Black individuals with a negative connotation which then rebranded this term to eventually become a set of laws that would segregate Black people from whites.

##What was the impact of the Brown v. Board of Education case?

The Brown v. Board of Education case was able to rule in favor of Oliver Brown in order to abolish segregation in education. This case determined that all students had to be desegregated and it also allowed for white and black students to be in the same classrooms and to receive the same education.

Games- Hostile games where it made hostile African Americans look like willing victims.

Objects- African American faces painted on wood and metal to be targeted, therefore was interpreted as a wrong source.

Problematic Interpretations- The running target that was sold for “gun target practice.”

When was the bus boycott and what did this event signify for the Black community?


The bus boycott was a form for the Black community to stand up for themselves and defend themselves from the segregation they were living in. This event took place from December 1955 to December 1956 and it was able to abolish segregation in public transportation with the Supreme Court determining segregation on public transportation unconstitutional.

What were some of the Civil Rights Movement and what was their course of action to abolish institutional racial segregation and discrimination?

MLK- worked with NAACP and other civil rights groups. MLK organized The March peacefully on Washington. The March brought 250,000 people to rally for civil and economic rights for African Americans. 

Malcolm X- urged his fellow African Americans to protect themselves “by any means necessary,” from white aggression.

Voting Rights Act- A bill passed on May 26, 1965, signed by President Johnson.

What was the difference between the white and black accounts regarding Jim Crow laws?

The white accounts would usually justify their actions and the Jim Crow laws so that all the society would believe them. However, the Black community didn't believe them as these laws were not justifiable and they were deeply based on segregation and racism.
