What was the Quartering Act?

The Quartering Act stated that Great Britain would house its soldiers in American barracks and public houses. 

Which means that any soldier could enter any house at any time and say "We're staying here for the night. Get out." The soldiers did not care about the colonists. If the colonists were in the middle of dinner and a soldier came in and stated that they were staying there then the colonists had to leave without hesitation, no time to grab personal belongings or anything.
