What was Reconstruction?
era after civil war when southern infrastructure, society, and state governments were built
What is "melting pot" and "tossed salad"
melting pot- all people are part of the American culture, all other cultures are erased
Tossed salad- all people are American citizens but other cultures are still alive
what was trench warfare
people fighting in ditches facing each other
civil rights activist, used nonviolent protest, public speaking, helped lead Montgomery bus boycott and march on Washington, lead SCLC
What did the harlem renaissance try to regain?
black culture lost to slavery/oppression
What were Jim Crow Laws and when did they start and end
laws that segregated people by race in public places, started in the end of reconstruction and ended during civil rights era

journalists who investigate corruption and bad business or government practices to try and make change

separating people by race in theatres, restaurants, hotels, buses, etc.

people rented and farmed a plot of land for a share of crop at harvest time, form of utilized slavery that traps people in debt

people who believe problems of society can be solved and the role of the gov. is to act for the good of the people

WWI- everyone stuck fighting in trenches
WWII- paratroopers attacked from behind, so they were attacking from both sides

case where the supreme court ruled that racial segregation in schools was illegal
How was the president's methods to end the Great Depression different?
Hoover-ignored it, left it to charities, businesses and state govs. to fix it
FDR- made the new deal which gave people jobs and provided support for different groups of people
What is the KKK
primarily Former Confederate group of terrorists, used violence to try and keep blacks and republicans out of office
What is social Darwinism?
Rich people deserve to be powerful and rich but poor people deserve to be poor
Why was trench warfare bad?
Many diseases, unsanitary, not a lot of food

led the SNCC, worked to end segregation, from Atlanta, represents ATL in house of reps for long time
What was life like for cowboys?
many former slaves and poor whites became cowboys, many did cattle drives and other laborious jobs, had a low pay of 25-40$, mostly young men. It was a dangerous, boring, and tiring job
How does the KKK reverse progress on reconstruction?
intimidated people to keep republicans out of office and scared black voters
What was American Imperialism and why was it bad?
People believed America was superior so they felt the need to expand territory, this was bad because it created tension with other countries and forced American culture on others
How was trench warfare fixed?
paratroopers because they attacked from both sides
What effects has segregation made on our world today?
highways built over minority neighborhoods, many schools still segregated because people did not have enough money to move away from lower income areas due to lack of generational wealth
