Lincoln was much more lenient in bringing the south back into the union, wanted it to be over as quickly as possible. Johnson wanted more punishment and stricter regulations for the south to rejoin the union.

The main motive for his proclamation was to gain an advantage in the war effort. Though freeing the slaves was a good consequence, the real reason he did it was to give the south an opportunity to stop fighting.

They lost because they were fighting with the wrong mentality. They should have fought to delay and to not lose, but they fought to win. They didn't use the tactics that George Washington used against the British.
