Triangle Trade was so important due to the fact that New England had land that was not able to be massively farmed.  This led to the use of the ocean to make money.  Now that they are independent, not only do they need to compete with Britain on the ocean, they also need to protect themselves.  Britain's navy was feared worldwide while America is still new to the world scene.

It was created as propaganda.  The meaning was to get the colonies to come together to fight alongside the British during the French and Indian war.  Join or die represents the fact that if colonies do not join, the French could win and their lives would be in jeopardy.
