Irish dancing has two different categories which are based on what kind of dance shoes they are wearing.Both of the types of shoes have a toe, bottom, sides of the shoe, the heel, the front tap and the back.
What is Hard shoes and Soft shoes, Hard shoes are made of black leather and have very flexible soles. Soft shoes have more of a ballet shoe feeling to them. They also are made of black leather, but they have much more flexibly then the Hard shoes. Soft shoes also lace up from the toes to the ankles, and do not make any sound.

In the 1830s Thomas Rice adapted a signature character for himself.
What is Jim Crow After the invention of his signature character he became even more popular often performing at sold out shows, with audiences demanding encore after encore. In 1832 Thomas Rice traveled to London England , where he made an even bigger name for himself performing blackface tap dance routines. In 1840,he was forced to retire in what year, due to developing a form of paralysis.This restricted his speech as well as his movement, and eventually lead to his death September 19, 1860.

What is Clog shoes. These shoes were very cheap and were offend associated with being poverty-stricken.The cotton mill workers would use the shoes to mimic the sound of the cotton looms. Soon this past time caught and coal miners, as well as pit workers began using their clog shoes to produce rhythm and sound. This created the beginning of Clog dancing.

In the mid 1800s Juba dancing was added to these shows, where William Henry Lane became the most famous Juba Dancer.
What is Minstrel Shows. It was here that music and rhythms were added for heightened entertainment. Theses dance numbers were only allowed to be performed in duets or groups, because of the Two-Coloured rule. Juba dancing is performed by stomping, slapping, and patting the arms, legs, chest, and cheeks. This style of dance is a major factor to the growth of Tap.

Some of the more formal Clog dancing competition even evolved winning major prizes.
