Depended on manufacturing, fur trade and farming. The people of Canada west were mostly English-speaking Protestants who wanted to dominate the people of Canada east, while the people of Canada east were mostly French-speaking catholics who were trying to hold onto their language and culture

From 1750 to 1850, Britain was having an Industrial revolution, many people moved from the farms to the city to work in factories. They wanted free trade, This meant no taxes on imports so they would be cheaper to buy

Lord Elgin wad the governor general in the province of Canada, in 1854 he persuaded the United States to sign a reciprocity treaty with Canada. There would be no taxes on Canadian wheat, timber, coal, fish, or potatoes going into the United States.

Effects of the great migration 

The great migration changed life in BNA, there were more English in Canada west than French in Canada east. As well as how the new immigrants needed food, jobs and shelter causing a drastic change in the economy

Water and railway transportation 

During the industrial revolution, people began to think in new ways to improve transportation. Rivers had rapids that made travelling by ship very complicated. New canals were built, so ships could go around them. Ships could not travel n freshwater in the winter and some towns were not near water railways made travelling on land a lot faster and easier so they could run all year.

Effects of the railways 

In the 1850s, the colonies began building railways between large towns. By the end of 1850, Canada west, Canada east. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia each had their own railway. Trade increased because more products could travel faster and farther. The railway created more work for everyone, travelling took less time, the government in each colony went into debt so for the government to recover they had to increase tax on imports and property taxes.
