The drought in California has had severe consequences for the state's agriculture industry. As rainfall levels dropped to record lows, farmers were forced to reduce their crop production significantly. This decrease in crop yields led to higher prices for fruits and vegetables in supermarkets across the country. Additionally, many farm workers lost their jobs as less labor was needed in the fields. The water shortage also caused several species of fish to become endangered as rivers and streams dried up. As a result of these environmental and economic impacts, the state government implemented strict water conservation measures for both residential and commercial use.

In 2011, a Brazilian fisherman named João Pereira de Souza found an oil-covered Magellanic penguin on a beach near Rio de Janeiro. He cleaned the penguin, nursed him back to health, and named him Dindim. After Dindim recovered, João released him back into the wild, expecting never to see him again. However, to João's surprise, Dindim returned to visit him a few months later.

Since then, Dindim has made an annual journey of thousands of miles to spend about eight months of the year with João. The penguin arrives in June and leaves in February, presumably to breed off the coast of Argentina and Chile. When Dindim is with João, he follows him around, allows João to feed him sardines, and even lets him pick him up.

This unusual friendship has continued for over a decade, with Dindim's most recent visit occurring in 2023. Marine biologists are amazed by this behavior, as it's extremely rare for wild penguins to form such strong bonds with humans. João and Dindim's relationship has become a heartwarming example of interspecies friendship and has attracted attention from around the world.
