What caused the riot that lead to Zero running away from Camp Green Lake?
Zero helped Stanley dig his hole in return for teaching him how to read. This made the other boys at the camp angry and they started picking on Stanley. They got into a fight and the Warden came. She forbid Zero and Stanley to continue the teaching and Zero was told that all he would ever be good for was digging holes. This upset him and made him run away.
Because the Warden, Mr. Sir and Mr. Pendanski had destroyed/hidden all Zero's files, and since there was no record of him being in the camp, they had no right to keep him there.
