The Power of Fate: Stanley always believes that he is unlucky and in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, one can argue that "he was in the right place at the right time," when he was hit by Clyde Livingston's shoes in the beginning of the story. Explain why?
The events in the book seem to be the result of fate's reunification of members of the Yelnats and Zeroni families in order to break the curse. Each unfortunate coincidence in the book, including Stanley getting hit on the head with Clydes Livingston's shoes was fate's way of bringing Zero and Stanley together.

The boys had to literally dig holes. However, the larger significance was the "holes" in the lives of Stanley and Zero. Stanley's life and ancestry is full of holes. For example, the fact that his ancestor never completed the prophecy. His life was an empty void before arriving in Camp Green Lake. Zero was abandoned and missed his mother. Throughout the book, both Zero and Stanley were trying to fill in the missing gaps of Camp Green Lake's history and their lives.
