No more than 30 days prior to the start of the third or later benefit for recertification. Prior to admission for regular readmits and within 48 hours for emergency readmits. (If patient dies with first 48 hours without a F2F, a F2F encounter can be deemed complete)

Who can perform the hospice face-to-face encounter?
A hospice physician or hospice nurse practitioner (NP). The hospice physician must be employed by the hospice or working under contract with the hospice. The NP must be a W2 employee or volunteer of the hospice.

What happens if the F2F is untimely?
If the F2F is untimely, Medicare will see the beneficiary as no longer terminally ill and no longer eligible for the hospice benefit. The hospice can readmit the beneficiary once the encounter occurs if the beneficiary still qualifies but the beneficiary/representative must sign a new election.
