Do you guys haze?

No! Hazing is absolutely unacceptable, we sign antihazing contracts, and we have rules in place to make sure New Members have an amazing and safe experience.

What does the commitment to Phi Mu look like?

It's whatever you want to make of it. You could be the next phi mu president and attend every single event we have to offer. Or you could only attend weekly chapters and mandatory events. But we recommend being engaged and going to events whenever you are free because they are fun and important.

Do you hang out outside of Phi Mu?

Our sisters have a lot of different interests, and because we form such close bonds in Phi Mu, we love supporting each other in various ways. Whether it's becoming roommates, going to AU in Motion shows, or just hanging out at smaller events like dinner, karaoke, or coffee dates at The Bridge, we’re always there for one another.

Are sororities cult like at American University?

While we do carry on traditions such as ritual ceremonies and wearing all white during our initiation events, we don't make members do anything they are uncomfortable with and we are not a cult. We are a very progressive chapter and we are constantly changing our bylaws to be more inclusive and modern.

Do Phi Mu's care about academics and grades?

We have an academic excellence chair woman who hosts weekly study hours because our members care very highly about academics.

What leadership positions do you offer?

We have all sorts of leadership opportunities for no matter what your skillset is. Besides big roles such as president, treasurer for people good with money, positions for event planning, social media, historian, socials, being a mentor...

What does your big/little look like?

We host ours and the Lincoln Memorial every year! We go on lots of sister dates and hold new member events to introduce them to the entire chapter. And then Big Little week is filled with gifts, funny social media posts, and themed tables.

Do we have mandatory service hours?

Yes! In past semesters, sisters have needed to meet a minimum of 5 hours. We also offer service opportunities outside of our big service events. Past opportunities we have done as a sister include litter clean ups, making dog toys for shelters, and grilling/handing out food to people in less affluent areas of DC.

What are the financial costs? And what if I can't pay them?

Phi Mu's dues are $90 per semester. However, there are also additional costs for New Members the first semester plus occasional costs that are added on to of dues. There is a breakdown of the dues on the PNM packet!

Something unique to Phi Mu is that we do not fine for ANYTHING, our dues are monthly installments, we are willing to work with members to come up with a plan if you are struggling with payments, and you can apply to our National Scholarships!

Is Phi Mu cliquey? 

When an organization is filled with over 80 woman, it is very difficult for everyone to be best friends. Everyone is so different but we all get along and respect each other. And because we all share similar values, Phi Mu leads to life long friendships that will make your college experience!

Why does your creed reference God? Is Phi Mu very religious?

While Phi Mu was originally founded on Christian values, we do not affiliate ourselves with a specific religion, we are inclusive and welcoming to people of all religions and backgrounds, and we are actively updating outdated rules and phrases from our bylaws.

What DEI initiatives do you have?

We were the first chapter of all Phi Mu chapters to have a DEI chair as part of leadership. We led the charge to allow members to wear pants as a part of our ritual attire. And we include DEI initiatives in our chapter meetings, have DEI movie nights, museum trips, and guest speakers. You can talk honestly about your experience with DEI as a part of Phi Mu and talk about how we are always trying to do more.

What is the GPA requirement of Phi Mu?

To be in good standing, the minimum GPA requirement is 2.8. Phi Mu has had one of the highest average GPAs across all Greek orgs the past few years.

Do you have many friends in other sororities?

we love Panhel love! We often have partnering events with other orgs such as socials, sisterhood events, recruitment events, and people often have many close friends in other orgs.

Do you actually work with the kids from CMNH?

We used to have in person visits to the hospitals before covid. Since restrictions have gone up, it has been difficult to get back into the hospitals but we hope to in the future. And sometimes miracle kids and families will come to our events as well!

Do you guys like to go out and party?

Our sisters have a wide range of interests, and we enjoy doing things with each other inside and outside of phi mu events. As a chapter we have at least one social per semester where we rent out a whole club and wear formal or themed dresses.

What is the annual leadership training event in Florida and what is the purpose?

PMOA, or Phi Mu Officer Academy is a great leadership opportunity. Where select officers have a retreat in Florida and get to meet Phi Mu officers from around the country, sit in on guest lectures, and receive leadership training.
