Symbolic interactionism has two theories

1. Labelling theory: those who are labelled as deviants will act like deviants. Example: young Muslim men who are labelled as terrorists are more likely to grow up and be violent 

2. Differential association theory: people learn deviant behaviour by hanging out with deviants. Example: people who have alternative fashion styles tend to hang out with each other

Both are terms that have to do with trade. Free trade is trade between countries with little government interference. Whereas protectionism is a strategy where the government imposes  barriers like tarrifs to help protect the domestic economy

Conflict theories say that society is fundamentally about a conflict between an oppressor and an oppressed group. Society is designed to maintain the power of the oppressor over the oppressed group. This semester, we looked at two conflict theories: feminism and Marxism.

Describe New International Division of Labour Theory and list 3 impacts it has 

This is the idea that goods should be manufactured in different parts of the world in order to save/make as much money as possible. 

There are many impacts, but here are 3

1. Transportation over many countries creates pollution

2. More jobs in developing countries, since companies will move there because it's cheaper because workers are paid less

3. Companies will move their operations away from developed countries to ones with less labour laws, resulting in unsafe working practices for the workers in developing countries

How does structural functionalism view change? 

Structural functionalism says that if institutions fail to socialize people properly, then anomie (lawlessness) will occur. It does not, however, tell us why these institutions will stop working, so it doesn't really offer a theory on change.

All three types of countries are heading towards structures where there are many old people and fewer young people. Developed countries are already there, some developing are already there, but are rapidly approaching and least developed countries won't get there until end of century

How does structural functionalism view deviance? Provide a example of how structural functionalism would view something deviant.

Structural functionalism thinks that deviance has an important role. 1. Shows what is culturally normal 2. Clarifies moral boundaries 3. Brings society together using us vs them logic. 

Structural functionalism might say that stigma against divorce is good because it shows society's strong commitment to the family institution and helps socially
