In 1863, a proclamation was read at this historical site by President Lincoln in order to free slaves. Newly freed slaves were taught here.
What is the Emancipation Oak?
Every October, Hampton hosts a wide variety of events to welcome alumni back to their Home by the Sea. This week typically includes pageants, fashion shows, concerts, a parade, and a football game.

Born and raised in Hampton, VA. This Alumna graduated from Hampton University in 1942 with a degree in mathematics and Physical Science. After graduation, she worked as a computer at Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA and later took advance classes in engineering. By 1958, she became the first black female engineer at NASA.

Many students and alumni claim this is the most beautiful spot on campus. This spot has a scenic view of the Hampton Marina and Naval Base. Students often use this spot to relax or hang out with friends.
What is the Waterfront?
Built in 1894, this building on campus has exhibits from Native American, African, and African American cultures. It also has the country’s first and largest collection of African-American Art.
What is the Hampton University Museum?
This alumna recently won an Oscar for her work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She graduated from Hampton Institute in 1982 with a BA in Theatre Arts. She was also the commencement speaker at the 2023 graduation.
Who is Ruth Carter?
Born in 1856 and graduating from Hampton in 1875, this alumnus helped General Armstrong to create a program for indigenous students to attend the university.
