At about 90,000, it's the most populous U.S. city on North America's biggest lake. The city's primary landmark was originally a "transporter bridge" completed in 1905, one of only two ever built in the United States. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a sentry in this city famously mistook a black bear for a Soviet spy, nearly causing nuclear-armed aircraft to scramble from a nearby base.
