Do humans have an open or closed circulatory system?
Closed! Insects have an open system, meaning that the blood does not circulate in vessels.
This fluid makes up approximately 55% of your blood.
Plasma
Which type of blood vessel carries blood away from the heart?
Arteries
Which chamber of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body?
Right atrium
How many chambers does a fish heart have?
2
How did President Nelson use a broken chair analogy to teach about blood?
"If you could create a chair that could fix its own broken leg, there would be no limit to the life of that chair. Many of you walk on legs that were once broken and do so because of your remarkable gift of healing.” ~Pres Nelson
What do white blood cells do?
Fight toxins and intruders

Which type of blood vessel carries blood towards the heart?
Veins
Which chamber of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs?
Right ventricle
What is a normal blood pressure reading?
120 mmHg/ 80 mmHg
How much blood is pumped through your body every day?
2,000 gallons! (7500 liters)
Which part of blood is responsible for clotting?
Platelets!
What is the purpose of capillaries?
They connect arteries to veins, but more importantly allow for oxygen to diffuse out to the muscle. They also uptake waste products from the muscle to carry back to the heart.
What is the difference between heart failure and a heart attack?
Heart failure is due to cells dying gradually because of lack of oxygen/nutrients. A heart attack is caused by a huge number of cells starving all at once.
What is insect blood called?
Hemolymph!
What is the purpose of red blood cells?
RBCs transport oxygen to cells!
What are venus valves?
Structures inside veins that allow blood to flow in only one direction. This is necessary in veins since the pressure in them is 1/12th the pressure in arteries.
It builds more muscle in the left ventricle, to increase the systolic blood pressure. However, this muscle does not receive the nutrients it receives and cells can die quickly!
What causes varicose veins?
Explain why insect blood is not red.
The red color of blood comes from a molecule called hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs. Insects receive oxygen directly through the cracks in their exoskeleton and therefore have no need of hemoglobin.
What is plasma made up of?
90% water.
Electrolytes (which help balance the pH of blood)
Waste products
What causes build-up inside blood vessels?
Fatty plaque, deposited by low-density lipoproteins (the taxis of bad cholesterol).
Which blood vessel carries blood to the lungs?
Pulmonary artery
What is "hydrostatic pressure"?
The force of fluid on the vessel through which it flows.
