What is culture?
A set of beliefs, values, and Practices a group of people has in common.
What is population?
The number of people in one place.
What is a population pyramid and what does it tell us?
What does “movement” mean in human geography?
How people, goods, or ideas travel from one place to another.)
What is a pull factor?
Things that attract people to migrate to a new region
Name one example of culture from your everyday life
a food item, clothing item, etc
What is population density?
Number of people living per square mile or kilometer.
Why is it useful to have access to the data from a population pyramid?
It can tell us if a country's population is growing, shrinking, has a gender imbalance, and the wealth of a country.
Name one example of movement you see in your daily life.
School buses, mail delivery, texting ideas, food shipped to stores.
What is a push factor?
Things that cause people to move or migrate to a new region.
How can two people live in the same place but have different cultures?
Many answers. For example: families could have different backgrounds, people could have moved here from different countries, or simply hold different beliefs)
Why do some places have a higher population density than others?
This can be impacted by many things, such as how wealthy a country is (access to birth control, ability to keep people alive for longer), the size of the country, etc...
If a population pyramid has a wide base, what does this tell us?
That this country has a much larger young population.
Why do people move from one place to another? Give one reason.
Jobs, safety, family, education, climate, etc.
What is a megacity?
A city with a population of over 10 million people.
How can culture influence the way people see or describe a place?
Peoples individual experiences and beliefs shape how we see the world around us. For example, big macs might be gross to someone who doesn't eat beef, or walking everywhere seems tiring/out of the ordinary for Americans.
How can population growth create challenges for a community?
Overpopulation means it might be difficult to feed everyone, house everyone and meet every ones needs. Underpopulation can cause an aging workforce, and shrinking population.
Describe what the population pyramid of a rich country might look like. Explain how you know this.
It would be wider in the middle and be taller as people in richer countries live older.
How does technology (like phones, cars, or the internet) change the way ideas move?
Faster communication, ideas spreading globally, more connections.)
What is Cultural Diffusion
The spread of culture traits from one region to another
Explain how both human factors (like traditions or jobs) and natural factors (like climate or landforms) can shape the culture of a region.
The environment can heavily shape the culture of a region. The environment can impact what clothes people wear, what foods they can grow, what animals they can farm, what areas they can access, etc.
How can changes in population density affect the way a region uses its land and resources?
crowded areas needing more housing, transportation, and services; rural areas losing population and closing schools or businesses; pressure on water, food, and space as density rises.
How can the shape of a population pyramid help predict future challenges a country might face?
aging population → need for healthcare/workers; youthful population → need for schools/jobs; rapid growth → pressure on resources.)
How can the movement of people, goods, or ideas connect distant places and make them depend on each other?
Students should think about global trade, shared cultures, supply chains, migration networks, etc.)
What is globalization?
The process in which countries are increasingly linked together through culture and trade.
