What are the parts of the Earth that make up the geosphere?

rocks, soil, and sediment including Earth's crust and core

100

What are two facts about Earth's salt water?

97% of Earth's water is salt water.

Oceans are made up of salt water.

Some lakes are made up of salt water.

We cannot drink salt water.

100

What are two examples of ways humans have changed Earth's land?

deforestation

landfills

cities replacing nature

100

Water found in rivers, lakes, glaciers, and ice sheets and underground that contains low concentrations of salt.

Fresh Water

Vocabulary:

What is the definition of Interactions?

Actions by one thing that have an effect on a different or separate thing.

200

What are three things that are part of Earth's biosphere?

Humans

Plants

Animals

200

Most of Earth's fresh water is not drinkable because it is stored away in ______________.

ice caps and glaciers

200

What are three ways we can help our planet Earth?

(hint: 3 R's)

Reduce

Reuse

Recycle

200

Areas where standing water covers the soil or where the ground is very wet.

Wetlands

200

Describe one way that human activity can impact an ecosystem in a negative way.

Humans can build houses and roads, destroying and changing an ecosystem. These changes could also affect the organisms that live there.

300

The shape of landforms is mostly due to the effects of ________________ and the ______________.

 oceans and the atmosphere

300

List three uses of Earth's fresh water.

Drinking

Transportation

Entertainment

300

How does farming affect the water and soil?

Some of the chemicals from fertilizers get into the groundwater.

Oil and chemicals and pollution stick to the soil.

300

The space, conditions, and all the living and nonliving things around an organism.

Environment

300

What is acid rain?

Air pollution affects the water that is in the air.  When raindrops form, the air pollution can cause the raindrops to be more acidic.  When this rain falls, we call it acid rain.

400

The four spheres in alphabetical order.

Atmosphere

Biosphere

Geosphere

Hydrosphere

400

What sources are the two largest sources of fresh water on Earth?

Groundwater and Ice caps/Glaciers

400

What are the effects of acid rain?

Acid rain does not just affect living things in our ecosystem; it can also have a negative effect on city's buildings.  Acid rain can wear down structures such as statues and buildings.

400

A feature on the surface of Earth such as a mountain, hill, dune, ocean, or river.

Landform

400

Pick a picture on the wall.  Explain the interactions of the Earth's systems.

Teacher will let you know if you are awarded the points.

500

What is the relationship between the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere.  Give an example.

It seems like events on Earth can affect the other systems of Earth.  Just because a volcanic eruption happens within the geosphere doesn't mean the other spheres are not affected.  A volcanic eruption probably affects the atmosphere and biosphere as well.

500

Fill in the blanks:

97% of Earth's water is _______ ________.

3% of Earth's water is ________ ________.

68.7% of Earth's fresh water is found in _______.

30.1% of Earth's fresh water is found in _______.

0.3% of Earth's fresh water is found in ____ ____.

Saline/Salt Water(oceans)

Fresh Water

Ice caps and glaciers

Groundwater

Surface Water (Lakes, Swamps, Rivers)

500

Tell what you know about what is being done to protect Earth's resources and environments.

Reducing the amount of waste we produce.

Reuse items instead of throwing them away.

Recycle materials so they can be made into something new.

500

The science and business of cultivating soil, growing crops, and raising livestock.

Agriculture
