Meat and oil (blubber)
What are reasons why humans hunted whales.
Fur, blubber, oil, meat, limit amount of fish predators.
What are reasons why marine mammals are hunted.
This Country imports the MOST ornamental fish AND a very large amount of Tuna.
Who is the United States.
A non-native organism that can cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health: one that wrecks havoc and can potentially crash an ecosystem.
What is an invasive species.
Overfishing, whaling, pollution, fossil fuels are all examples of this situation where humans take more than needed and the whole population suffers.
What is "Tragedy of the Commons"
Over 2,000 years.
What is how long humans have been hunting whales for.
Overall did the Marine Mammal Protection Act help species numbers to increase or decrease?
What is INCREASE.
The removal of a species of fish from a body of water at a rate that the species cannot replenish, resulting in those species becoming underpopulated in that area.
What is Overfishing.
Bottom of cargo ships, intentional release of pets, accidental release through garden plants.
What are reasons how invasive species are introduced to ecosystems.
When a fisherman takes too many fish from a pond leaving none for anyone else because they have a large family.
Tragedy or NOT a Tragedy?
What is an example of Tragedy of the Commons.
Someone takes it all and hurts others in the process.
Nantucket and New Bedford, Massachusetts
Capitals of Whaling in the World
1700-1900's
What is the main problem with the Marine Mammal Protection Act?
Only protects species living in the United States
Loss of a food source, loss of money to supply for family, illegal fishing, going to jail. (what are all these examples of)
What are ways overfishing negatively impacts humans.
The lionfish lives in its native country of Australia. Sharks eat the fish so it does not over reproduce and it helps regulate the species below it in the food chain.
Invasive or not invasive?
What is NOT an invasive species. They are living in their natural habitat and living peacefully in the food web.
When college students through trash in the local pond on campus over and over again with no regards for anyone else. Eventually closing down the area for no one else to enjoy.
Tragedy or NOT a Tragedy?
What is an example of Tragedy of the Commons.
Someone takes advantage of the pond and hurts others in the process.
Name the two exceptions why whales are still hunted today.
What are Aboriginal (Native) Tribes and Scientific Research
This act protects all species threatened with extinction that fall within the borders of the United States.
What is the Endangered Species act of 1973.
Destroys coral reefs, bycatch, crashes ocean food webs.
What are ways overfishing negatively impacts ecosystems.
The common reed plant from Europe grows fast and crowds out or shades native plants in the long island sound so they can not get enough sunlight, messing with the whole food chain.
Invasive or not invasive?
What is an invasive species.
Not native, takes over native plants.
When native Eskimos in Alaska sustainably fish whales, don't waist any of the meat or bones and continue spiritual rituals from their past.
Tragedy or NOT a Tragedy?
What is an NOT an example of Tragedy of the Commons.
They are whaling but not taking too many out of the ocean. Leaving enough for the ocean and other people too.
Global Warming, Struck by Boats, Noise pollution
What are other human induced issues that affect whales negatively.
Why are marine mammals important to ecosystems?
Apex predators at the top of the food chain, keep other lower species from overproducing.
Are also prey for other larger marine organisms.
Fishing quotas, new types of fishing nets, no fish areas, education, stricter restrictions on fishing juvenile fish.
What are changes that must happen for sustaining fish populations.
There is a small population of red bellied turtles (native to North Carolina) in the Long Island Sound, releases by an owner that no longer wanted them. These turtles have integrated nicely into the ecosystem and do not compete with local species.
Invasive or not invasive?
What is NOT an invasive species. They are small in numbers and not impacting the food chain negatively.
When Exxon mobile buys up all the oil rigs in the World and puts other companies out of business and then charges people way more for oil then needed so some people start to go without heat or electricity.
Tragedy or NOT a Tragedy?
What is an example of Tragedy of the Commons.
Someone takes it all and hurts others in the process.
