___________ give the body structure. Without these you would be a big pile of skin, muscles, and organs!
BONES
What is the pupil similar to?
A window because it is a small opening in the eye.
True or False:
Every eye needs at least a little bit of light to see.
TRUE
What are the senses your body uses to help you understand and respond to the world?
Sight, Hearing, Touch, Taste, and Smell
What is a tendon?
A part of the body that attaches muscle to bone; like a string
What is the retina of an eye?
The back of the eye that sense light and sends messages to the brain
If your pupil is teeny tiny, what does this mean?
You must be in a very well lit environment.
The movement nerves and sensory nerves come together to make the __________________.
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Use the words muscle, tendon, and bone to explain how you move.
The tendon is attached to the muscle and bone. When the muscles squeezes it pulls on the tendon which then pulls the muscles and allows movement.
In our eye models we made, if the image was blurry on our retina (the index card), how could you fix this?
By moving the retina closer to the front of the eye, or farther back. To see clearly, the retina has to be the PERFECT distance from the front of the eye.
Your pupils are huge and then shrink quickly. What has probably just happened?
What happens within your brain if you continue to practice something (like grabbing a dropping a ruler)
You eventually would get faster and faster because your brain becomes faster at processing this information to then tell your body to respond!
True or False:
If the tendon is removed, the arm will still have its shape. But the muscle won’t be able to move the arm anymore because the muscle won’t be attached to the bone
TRUE
What causes blindness?
Issues with a cornea lens (no lens, cloudy lens, etc) or issues with the retina and its capability to send messages to the brain.
What is the pupil's main job?
The pupil lets light into your eye as the muscles of your iris change its shape.
What are 3 jobs your brain is constantly doing?
1. Taking in information (from your senses)
2. Making decisions
3. Controlling muscles (to make your body move)
What helps our bodies have strength? (think what parts work together to help us move, lift, etc.)
Our muscular and skeletal systems
Tommy wants to make a model of an eye. He has a magnifying lens, a piece of paper, a lamp, and a donut. How could he arrange these items to make a model of an eye?
Flashlight, magnifying glass, donut, paper
Why do animal's eyes often look like they are glowing in bright lights at night (think of a deer in the headlights)?
Their eyes “GLOW”- the light reflects off the back of their eyeballs due to a shiny layer in the back of their eyes called the Tapetum Lucidum.
Explain how your senses, nerves, brain, and muscles help you respond to external stimuli. (Basically explain the steps your body takes when you see things like a $20 bill on the ground).
1. You see the $20 bill on the ground with your eyes.
2. The nerves sends a message to the brain.
3. The brain makes the choice to pick up the money.
4. The brain sends a message to the nerves of the arm, hand, and fingers to pick up the $20 bill!
WOOHOOO, $20 richer!!!
