It was the 50th Quarter Quell. There was twice as many people in the arena. He outsmarted everyone. He realized that there was a forcefield around the edge of the arena. When you threw a weapon at it, it would bounce off. He used the Capitol's design of the Games to win.

Katniss thought he was just a drunk who refused to actually help them. She thought he was super annoying and mean to how he spoke to her about how she should act, to be "charming" for the Capitol. Now during the Games, she knows that he is trying to help her survive - he sends her the medicine.

Manipulative power & Control - The Capitol started the Hunger Games to remind the districts of their authority after a past rebellion. The Games serve as a reminder that any rebellion will come with severe consequences, reinforcing the Capitol's influence over everyone's lives. But the Capitol broadcasts the Games as a glamorous, exciting event, turning it into a spectacle for their citizens.

She never backs down from the challenges she faces. She sacrifices herself for the lives of those she loves. She finds makeup, colors, fancy things, and anything with the Capitol to be nonsense.

Fear & Oppression - The Games serve as a way of showing that any disobedience will come with severe consequences, making sure the districts remember who is in charge. The Reaping set the tone for the Games, it marks the start of something terrifying, and their reactions show how much they dread it. The Capitol loves the Games and finds it extremely entertaining. District 12 finds it as a depressing and terrifying time.

Haymitch - she relies on him to tell her what she needs to do and how she needs to act in order to survive the Games. She knows that he can get sponsors for her. During the Games she realizes that Haymitch isn't sending her water because she is so close to finding it. Haymitch sends her medicine, so now she can rely on him during the Games as well for those important.

Rue - Reminds Katniss of Prim. With that connection and similarities, Katniss feels an instant sense of needing to protect her. They end up becoming allies. Katniss trusts her to light the fires in the woods to distract the Careers.
