What is a bystander?

Bystanders are the people who see or know of bullying happening to someone else. A lot of times, bullying happens when adults are not around. But there are probably bystanders.

Bystanders have a lot of power to help stop bullying or to make the problem worse.

Why is it important to refuse bullying?

When we create a school culture that refuses bullying, it let's others know that it is not okay and will not be tolerated. It also keeps everyone at school safe.

Terrance is a friend of Pedro’s. He doesn’t like seeing Pedro being bullied. But he is afraid if the older boys stop bullying Pedro, they might start bullying him. So he laughs when they knock Pedro down. Is Terrance part of the bullying problem? Why?

What is a conflict? How is this different than bullying?

A conflict is two-sided and happens occasionally. All parties are upset and parties need to take responsibility and work things out

When we report, it is to keep someone safe at school. Our goal is to make Hunters Glen a safe place for all students.

How can bystanders help refuse bullying?

Instead of joining in on the bullying, bystanders can help put a stop to bullying by supporting the student who is getting bullied. This may look like sticking up for them, reporting to a teacher (or encouraging the person to report) and telling the person who is bullying to stop.

Someone created a website that says mean things about a student at your school named Angel. You and all your friends have seen the website, and everyone is talking about it. You don’t know who made the website, but some of your friends have posted insults on it. You don’t know Angel very well, but you think this is cyber bullying. What can you do to help support Angel?

Why is it important to know the difference between reporting and tattling?

Reporting means that something is harmful or dangerous, and you are doing it to help others. Tattling means you are just trying to get someone in trouble. It's important to know the difference because of the level of impact it can have on a situation- we want to make sure to keep people safe and report, rather than tattle about something that is probably not helpful for the teacher to know/solve.
