How does an earthquake happen?

Vibrations and energy is released by plate tectonics colliding and rubbing against themselves.

100

Most volcanos form at the boundaries of __________

Tectonic plates

The majority of volcanic arcs can be found in the ____________,  a horseshoe-shaped string of about 425 volcanoes that edges the Pacific Ocean.

Ring of Fire

What are tectonic plates?

The lithosphere: Rigid outer shell of the earth. Composed of crust and upper most part of the earths mantle.

400

A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, THIS happens...

eruption.

400

What is the range of the fuji scale?

F0 - F5

500
Give two reasons why hurricanes form.
the Sun’s rays heat up water to 82oF or warmer and rising winds rotate in tight spirals.
500
Where do hurricanes happen?
all around the world
500

What is the relationship between volcanoes and earthquakes?

The earthquake activity of numerous volcanoes is closely monitored to provide warning signs of an imminent eruption. Large volcanic eruptions, especially the explosive type, can release huge amounts of energy that can be recorded by seismographs even far from the source.

- Both linked to plate tectonics.

500

In an eruption, ___________ shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods.

gases and rock

what are some safety tips that you can follow in order to stay safe during a tornado

  • Get as low as possible: If you are inside, get to the lowest floor of the building. Lots of people have underground shelters or stow away in their basements.
  • Stay in the middle: Stay close to the center of the building and make sure you are as far away from windows as possible.
  • Strong furniture: Source a piece of strong furniture, or a mattress to hide under. You can also hide in a wardrobe.
  • Avoid high ceilings: If you are in a school, or somewhere else with very high ceilings, avoid them as much as possible.
  • Get in position: Find a wall, squat down and place your hands on the back of your head.
  • No shelter: If you can’t find any shelter, find the lowest, most protected area of ground and cover your head with your hands.
  • Do not drive: Cars are extremely dangerous in tornadoes, but, if you happen to be in one, position your head above the steering wheel and cover yourself up as much as possible.
  • Stay away from bridges: Whilst it might seem like a good idea, do not seek shelter under bridges or underpasses, as the fast-paced winds tend to send debris under them.
