What does it mean to paraphrase or summarize information from a source?
To restate another person’s idea in the writer’s own words. A paraphrase must be quite different in vocabulary and word order, but it should still retain the original idea.
Why are there no quotation marks around the words in the following sentence, even though it is obvious that the writer used information taken from an outside source in the sentence?:
The University of Virginia, whose student honor code dates from 1842, weathered a plagiarism scandal in May 2001, when 122 students were accused of copying research papers (“Cheating”).
The author of the essay found this information in an online edition of the University of Virginia campus newspaper, but did not copy-and-paste the text; the author paraphrased the information.

The title of the publication, the Faculty Resource Guide, is mentioned in the signal phrase at the beginning of the sentence so it does not need to appear in the parentheses; and there is no author listed for this document

What is a Signal Phrase or Lead-In Phrase?
A word or words that introduce information from someone else. A signal phrase or a lead-in phrase comes before a quotation, paraphrase, or summary, and it includes citation information, like the author’s name, and/or the title of the source. The word or words “signal” to the reader that the writer is using someone else’s ideas, and it “leads in” to the new information.
