Effect: Jess and the twins head up the mountain. p.6 Why did they go up the mountain?
Jess and the twins went up the mountain to go to the cabin and to see if Skeleton Woman was real or not.
Jess saw two matching buzz-cut heads, four identical green eyes, and about ten thousand freckles.
Who are the Rowan twins?
Hot rocks pelted her like bullets shooting down from the sky.
What is a simile?
Jess couldn't stand to listen to Missy and her story about the Skeleton Woman. She probably was sick and tired of hearing it and she wanted to prove Missy was wrong. She would have done anything to prove that Skeleton Woman was just a myth or an urban legend.
What is an inference?
Cause: Clive hated hearing trees falling and the grinding sound of saws and axes.
Effect: Clive quit his job as a lumberjack and opened Clive's diner.
She just wouldn't shut up. She kept talking over and over again about the Skeleton Woman.
Who is Missy?
Jess used to be good pals with Missy. But that was about a million years ago, before Missy's dad got an important new job at the lumber company.
What is a hyperbole?
Cedar was a small town with only 400 people. It was May 18, 1980 at 8:32 near Mount St. Helens, Washington.
What is the setting?
Effect: Jess can't turn back and get her dad's camera from the shack.
Cause: The floor started rolling up and down. Everything was shaking. An earthquake had just occurred right under her feet.
Her eyes were like burning, black smoldering coal.
Who is Skeleton Woman?
The ground was now splitting apart, like ice breaking on a frozen pond.
What is a simile?
Jess and the twins quickly jumped into a big hole created by the earthquake. Next, then started digging as quickly as possible. After that, the trees were falling all around then.
What is sequencing?
Effect: the kids go down into the deep hole and start digging.
Cause: The volcano was erupting. A large cloud of hot air, gas, ash and rock spewed from the volcano and was coming down the mountainside. It was known as the pyroclastic surge.
With his big belly, bushy beard, and laughing eyes, he had always reminded Jess of a younger version of Santa Claus.

The Earth is a big ball of candy with different layers.
What is a metaphor?
It was a very peaceful place. Jess' Dad loved it hear. He would listen to the sounds in the forest and was careful not to step on any plants or insects. It was a beautiful mountain, full of colorful flowers, trees and wild animals. It smelled fresh like it had just rained earlier in the day.

Effect: The helicopter is able to spot Jess.
Cause: Jess made a big cloud of ash using a large tree branch that had fallen on the ground.
The mountain’s lower slopes were blanketed with green trees. The top was covered with snow. Its perfect triangle peak sparkled in the sun
What is Mount St. Helens?
Kaboom! The big, black cloud of smoke came billowing out of the volcano. Hot rocks and ash were spewing everywhere. Trees were falling down all around us.
What is onomatopoeia?
The earthquake was the first sign that an eruption was going to occur. The ground started shaking. The floor was rolling up and down like a roller coaster.
