Following the birth of Hadhrat Ismael (as), Hadhrat Ibrahim (as) was commanded by Allah to leave Hadhrat Hajirah (as) and their infant son in a desolate, uninhabited valley, which is now Makkah. When Hadhrat Ibrahim (as) left them with only a small amount of water and dates, Hadhrat Hajirah (as) followed him, asking why they were being left in such a barren place. When Hadhrat Ibrahim (as) did not respond, she asked, "Has Allah commanded you to do this?" When he replied, "Yes," her reply was, "Then Allah will not cause us to be lost".
When the water and food supply ran out, the baby Hadhrat Ismael (as) became thirsty and began to cry. Distraught, Hadhrat Hajirah (as) ran between the two hills of Safa and Marwa seven times, searching for water or assistance. She ran back and forth seven times.
In her desperation, she prayed to God. When she looked near Hadhrat Ismael (as)'s feet, the baby had kicked a lot, causing a spring of water to gush forth near the child known as "Zam Zam".
