This group is compared to the other groups as the one that does not get the independent variable or the treatment.
What is the control group?
The one factor being tested in an experiment.
What is the independent variable?
This is the thing that will change, that you intend to measure.
What is dependent variable?
Must stay the same between the groups.

The first step of the scientific Process.
What is identifying a problem or asking a question?
This week is the control group if you decide that you want to compare which music makes you fall asleep faster. Week 1 you listen to rock music. Week 2 you listen to country music. Week 3 you listen to classical music. Week 4 you listen to no music.
What is week 4 - no music?
This would be the Independent Variable if you investigate if the depth of the ocean affects the size of the fish that live there.
What is the depth of ocean?
A group of scientists test the behavior that women find men without earrings more attractive than men with earrings. This is the IV or treatment.
What is men wearing earrings?
You are testing if different amount of light affect plant growth. The plants are planted in the same soil. This is the constant.
What is the soil?
The if...then... because statement that is testable.
What is a hypothesis?
Miss Andersen wants to know if watching a particular TV show will improve her students counting skills. She had three groups of 10 students. One group watched the TV show for 30 minutes a day for 1 week. One group did not watch any counting show. She had the last group watch a different TV show for 30 minutes. This group is the control group.
What is "the group that watched nothing?"
A scientist wants to know if the production of starch during photosynthesis is faster when plants are exposed to different amounts of light. This would be the dependent variable.
What is amount of starch produced?
Children who entered kindergarten at age 5 were compared with children who entered kindergarten at age 6 on measures of academic achievement taken at grade 5. Results indicate that children who entered kindergarten at age 6 scored higher on standardized tests than those kids that entered at age 5. This is the DV?
What is score on standardized tests?
This is the group that gets compared to the Independent Variable.
What is the control group?
The part of the scientific method to where the data is collected.
What is the experiment?
Pea plant clones are giving different amounts of water for three-week period. The first pea plant receives 400 milliliters a day. The second pea plant receives 200 milliliters a day. The third pea plant receives 100 milliliters a day. The fourth pea plant does not receive any extra water: the plant only receives natural ways of receiving water. The heights of the pea plants are recorded daily. This group is the control group.
What is the pea plant with no water?
Spending time with a pet animal decreases the amount of stress right before taking a test. This is the dependent variable.
What is the amount of stress?
Different rose bushes are grown in a greenhouse for two months. The number of flowers on each bush is counted at the end of the experiment. This is the DV.
What is the number of roses on each bush?
One tank of gold fish is fed the normal amount of food once a day. A second tank is fed twice a day. A third tank is fed four times a day during a six week study. The fish’s weight is recorded daily. These are the constants. (at least two)

What is a conclusion?
These are the variables that need to be clearly defined in an experiment.
What are the control group, independent variable, dependent variable, and constants?
You water three sunflower plants with salt water. Each plant receives a different concentration of the salt solution. A fourth sunflower plant receives just water. After two weeks, the height of the plants is measured. This is a constant.
What is the sunflower plant or they type of plant?
Three redwood trees are kept at different humidity levels inside a greenhouse for 12 weeks. One tree is left outside in normal conditions. The heights of the trees are measured once a week. This is what is wrong with this experiment.
What is the one tree left out in normal conditions?
In order for a experiment to be valid and develop creditable data is needed. When setting up an experiment, this is the only thing that needs to be changed.
What is the independent variable?
In this step, you may create a graph or a chart to visually organize the data you collected in order to compare the results.
