Which two details would be most important to include in a summary?

Water plays an important part in our lives and in our environment. It covers nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface. It is fun to play in, but it is also needed for life. In fact, we can not survive without water to drink. People also need water to wash, cook, and grow food. Every living thing needs water. Without it, plants and trees would not grow, aquatic life would have no where to live, and animals who find their food in the water would have nothing to eat. Up in Earth’s atmosphere, water vapor cools and collects into clouds. When enough clusters of cloud particles stick together, they tumble back down to Earth as rain, snow, hail, or sleet. Without water, the water cycle would not work, and we would not have precipitation on Earth. Did you know that most of the world’s population does not have access to clean water? We are very lucky to live in a country where clean water is available for us to drink. It is up to us to be responsible users of the water we have on Earth.

Choose the best main idea for the passage.

There are many ways you can protect your teeth from cavities. When cavities form they give bacteria a place to hide while forming a clear coating on your teeth, called plaque. A build up of plaque can burn holes in your teeth, so it is important to prevent the plaque from forming. Using fluoride toothpaste is a good way to prevent cavities. Fluoride is a chemical that hardens your tooth enamel and makes it harder for acids to burn through your teeth. Some water bottling companies add fluoride to their water, so drinking water with fluoride in it will also help. Another way you could prevent cavities is to avoid sugary foods, and chew sugar-free gum. Bacteria loves sugar, and when you eat lots of sugar they eat, too! There are many ways to prevent cavities, but the best way is to brush for two minutes, at least two times a day, using fluoride toothpaste and a toothbrush. By doing this, you are making sure that you still have your teeth when you are older. It will also give you something to smile about!

Give two pieces of evidence to support the claim that you must potty train your dog.

Having a dog in your home can be very rewarding, but living with a dog that is not potty trained can cause a messy situation. Without the proper training, a dog will potty inside your home. This can stain your floors and make your house smell bad. In order to prevent this, you have to teach your dog to use the bathroom outside. This will require time and patience on your end. You may have to spend more time outside while you wait for your dog to potty. Giving treats as rewards will also help teach your dog right from wrong. If you love your dog but hate cleaning doggie doo-doo off the rug, teach your dog to use the bathroom outside.

How is the information in the passage organized?

Ever since the statue of our town founder was unveiled last month, it has been the victim of graffiti almost nightly. The vandals have drawn mustaches on General Whipple and his horse. They've covered them with toilet paper. They've even painted the word "horse" on the horse. We've had to use money from the town just to keep cleaning it up, and money is going to run out soon. Luckily, I have a plan to protect the statue and save money. I propose that we purchase a set of solar-powered floodlights that will keep the statue brightly lit all night long. This will make it nearly impossible for anyone to sneak around near the statue. Since the lights will gather their energy for free during the day, the cost will be minimal. In addition, we will place two small video cameras on the premises. Hopefully, this plan will stop the vandalism once and for all.

What is the text structure of this passage?

During a basketball game, players sometimes illegally come in contact with their opponent. When this happens, the result is a foul. If a foul occurs while the player is trying to shoot the ball, the game is stopped, and the fouled player gets to shoot “free throws” from a special line on the court. If the player who was fouled made the original shot, he or she only gets to shoot one free throw. If the player did not make the shot, he or she is allowed to shoot two free throws. If the player was fouled when he or she was shooting from behind the three point line, that player is given the opportunity to shoot three free throws! Clearly, a foul can result in serious penalties in the sport of basketball.

Which sentence best show the author's position on the topic of technology?

Technology has changed the way we live. What used to take days, weeks, or months can now happen instantly at the press of a button or swipe of a screen. Mobile phones first became popular in the 1990s. Before that, people on the street had to use a public or shared payphone in a phone booth. Before the introduction of smartphones with cameras in 2000, people had to take pictures with a bulky camera and a roll of film. In 2001, Apple released the first iPod, and the way people listened to music changed forever. Today, GPS devices help us travel. Emails, texts, and video calls help us communicate. Just stop and take a look around. You’ll easily see how technology has changed the world around you.
